The Works 1625 First Edition
of Joseph Hall
Printed In London by For Nathaniel Butter &c.
The Volume is in Very Good Condition bound in twentieth century half calf over cloth boards, with expertly applied gilding to the spine, divided into seven compartments by six gilt & raised bands, with gold lettering in the second compartment from the top. Externally the boards and spine are lightly scuffed in general, with board corners bumped a bit. Internally the leaves are generally clean and amply margined, ruled throughout, and with some small tears and stains at the margins on occasion.
The Volume is Complete in All Respects The volume appears to largely conform to ESTC S120194, however the pagination and collation of this copy deviates significantly, while maintaining continuity of the text (catchwords match and the text is continuous) thus we must assume this is a Scarce unrecorded variant. This is a reasonable assumption, given the multiplicity of printers engaged commissioned for this project and the complications booksellers assembling and binding the sheets for sale. Also, in this copy, Noah’s Dove has been placed later in the volume, before the third volume of the contemplations. See below for pagination & dimensions.
Of Joseph Hall
The reputation of Joseph Hall rests on broad sweep of his writings. From his early satirical pieces, including an important early Dystopian piece which would later inspire Jonathan Swift. The substantive works on religion and controversy are contained in the collected works, outlining Hall’s support of Episcopacy and denying the authority of the Papacy, alongside extensive meditations and devotional pieces. Hall was influenced by Lispsian Neostoicism and examined the political aspects of religion, while decrying separatist non-conformists.
